Lokrum Island
Just opposite the urban city of Dubrovnik, Lokrum represents an oasis of silence and piece. Lush Lokrum is a beautiful, forested island full of holm oaks, black ash, pines and olive trees, and an ideal escape from urban Dubrovnik. It’s a popular swimming spot, although the beaches are rocky. To reach the nudist beach, head left from the ferry and follow the signs marked FKK; the rocks at the far end are Dubrovnik’s de facto gay beach. Also popular is the small saltwater lake known as the Dead Sea. It is most suitable for children and non-swimmers. The island’s main hub is its large medieval Benedictine monastery, which houses a restaurant and a display on the island’s history and the TV show Game of Thrones, which was partly filmed in Dubrovnik. This is your chance to pose imperiously in a reproduction of the Iron Throne. The monastery has a pretty cloister garden and a significant botanical garden, featuring giant agaves and palms from South Africa and Brazil.
Lokrum Nature Reserve
The roads and walking paths of Lokrum will take you through the botanical garden with an interesting collection of eucalyptuses, cactuses and succulent plants to the remains of the 12th/13th century basilica, the 15th/16th century monastery with an atrium garden, and the summer residence of Maximilian von Habsburg from the 19th century with gardens and a park. You will be enchanted by the woods of holm-oak, flowering ash, Aleppo pine, the old olive grove from the time when the Benedictines ran the island, gardens and parks.
Game of Thrones on Lokrum
Game of Thrones movie set take place on Island. The former Benedictine monastery on island played an important role in the Qarth-based strand of season two, with the garden party of Xaro Xhoan Daxos taking place in the cloisters. Boasting good beaches and some cactus-filled gardens, Lokrum is a good half-day trip from the city. If you visit Benedictine monastery on Lokrum island you will be able to take photo in Iron Throne.
